They can be found in margarines and spreads and can often be found in packaged and processed foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17636085\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2007 study<\/a> on monkeys showed that a trans fat diet induces abdominal obesity and insulin sensitivity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#2 Don&rsquo;t drink too much alcohol<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research suggests that consuming too much alcohol can make you gain belly fat. Heavy alcohol consumption is linked to obesity and excessive fat storage around the waist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst small amounts of alcohol can have health benefits, aim to limit your consumption of alcohol or abstain completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#3 Eat a high protein diet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.runwithcaroline.com\/the-best-protein-food-for-runners\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2525\">Protein<\/a> is a key nutrient when it comes to weight loss and weight management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that high protein intake increases the release of the &lsquo;fullness&rsquo; hormone PYY which decreases appetite and promotes fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other studies have shown that people who eat more protein tend to have less abdominal fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good protein sources include meat, fish, eggs, dairy, whey protein and beans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#4 Reduce your stress levels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive levels of stress triggers the production of cortisol &ndash; the body&rsquo;s stress hormone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research shows that high cortisol levels increase appetite and drive abdominal fat storage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim to reduce your levels of stress by doing activities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runwithcaroline.com\/benefits-of-yoga-for-runners\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5449\">yoga<\/a> and practising meditation. Even going for a run can do wonders for your stress levels and mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#5 Limit your intake of sugary foods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sugar consumption has been linked to several chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, obesity and liver disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive sugar intake is a major cause of weight gain and increased abdominal fat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#6 Cut back on refined carbs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A high intake of refined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runwithcaroline.com\/carb-loading-for-runners\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6648\">carbs<\/a> (also known as processed carbs) is linked to excessive belly fat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By replacing refined carbs with unprocessed, starchy carbs you will see improvements in your metabolic health and reduced belly fat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthy carb sources are whole grains, vegetables and legumes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#7 Strength train<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.runwithcaroline.com\/30-day-strength-training-plan-for-runners\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5246\">Strength training<\/a> (also known as resistance training) has a whole host of benefits for runners when performed regularly as part of a well-rounded training plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aerobic exercise like running when combined with strength training can do wonders to reduce visceral fat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you decide to start lifting weights, I suggest you start with the basics. You can find more information in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runwithcaroline.com\/30-day-strength-training-plan-for-runners\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5246\">30 day strength training plan for runners<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#8 Avoid sugary drinks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sugary drinks like soda, sweet tea and alcoholic mixers containing high levels of sugar are associated with significant abdominal fat gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To lose belly fat, it&rsquo;s best to avoid sugary drinks all together and simply drink water instead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#9 Get plenty of sleep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know the benefits of a good night&rsquo;s sleep for our physical and mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that people who don&rsquo;t get enough sleep tend to gain more weight, which may include belly fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep each night and practise a good sleep routine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#10 Eat fatty fish<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatty fish like salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel and anchovies are incredibly good for your health as they contain high quality protein and omega-3 fats that protect you from disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim to get 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week.
